We all can’t wait for the winter to pass, as the summer is reserved for our holidays and relaxation. That being said, it is very important that you keep your skin safe and healthy during this period, as prolonged exposure to the sun is directly related to skin cancer. Even though there were some major breakthroughs in skin cancer treatments in recent years, it is much better to take preventive steps and keep your skin healthy. Make sure to follow the following tips that will keep your skin healthy.

Staying safe from the sun

There are several steps that you can take if you want to keep your skin safe from sun rays:

  • Cover your skin — Whenever you are going out during the day, make sure that you cover as much of your skin as possible. It is enough to wear thin clothing, but it has to cover most of your skin. You can also go with a wide-brimmed hat that will keep your face protected. Additionally, start wearing sunglasses, as they keep 99% of UV light away from your eyes.
  • Sunscreen — Use a sunscreen with SPF 30. Many people burn their skin despite the fact that they are using sunscreen. It is important to regularly reapply it every two hours, or every time you go swimming.
  • Avoid peak times — There are certain times of the day when UV rays are the most dangerous. This is why you should steer away from the sun and stay in the shade between 10 am and 4 pm. This is the period when UV rays are the strongest and when your skin can be seriously damaged, so stay in the shade during this period and enjoy tanning before and after.
  • If you think that tanning beds are a better solution, you are wrong; stay away from artificial tanning, as it is even more dangerous than the sun.

Make sure to follow these steps when you are on a holiday. Your skin is going to love it and you are not going to have to go through the whole sunburn ordeal.

Picking appropriate sunscreen

People believe that sunscreen should only be used during the holidays, however, it should actually be used during the whole summer, on body parts that are exposed to the sun. The reason for this is the fact that the days are much longer than in the winter and, as the weather is pleasant, people spend much more time outside during the day.

Before you decide to purchase a sunscreen lotion, make sure that you know what to look for. Check out the product labels for the following things:

  • Spectrum — Make sure that “broad spectrum protection” is indicated on the label. This means that the sunscreen offers protection against UVA and UVB rays. This is more important because of the UVA rays, as those are connected with skin cancer, whereas UVB ray protection is provided by all sunscreen products on the market; these rays cause sunburn.
  • SPF — The sun protection factor is important. The higher it goes, the more protection you are going to get. For example, SPF 15 filters out 94% of the UVB rays, whereas SPF 30 filters out 97%. The difference lowers as the numbers go up, so having SPF 30 is more than enough.
  • Water resistance — There are many products that carry this label, but this does not mean that the water is not going to wash the sunscreen off your body. Even though these sunscreens stay on the skin for a longer period of time, make sure that you reapply it every time you exit the water.

Add some supplements in your nutrition

Nutrition is generally very important, and it is important to eat healthy food that is rich in a variety of vitamins. However, there is a direct link between vitamin B3 and skin cancer. If you intake enough of this vitamin, your chances of developing skin cancer are reduced by 23%. Other than this, make sure that you drink plenty of fluids, water especially, so that the skin is hydrated at all times.

These are very easy tips to follow if you are looking for a way to keep your skin healthy. Make sure that you follow all of these steps to reach the best results.
