There is something a little bit strange in the way that we put our bodies through a lot of bad things when we are younger, and then start obsessing about our health only once we pass that midlife point and our bodies can’t take the same amount of punishment and still recover completely.

As I often like to tell people, it’s better and much simpler to start working on maintaining your youthful look while you’re still young, rather than trying to turn back time once the damage has already been done. That being said, you are never too old to make a healthy change in your life, and focusing on these five essential tips will have you looking great and energetic well past retirement.

1. Eat as many different kinds of fruit, vegetables and nuts regularly

Your body needs a good balance of many different vitamins, minerals and other nutrients in order to stay healthy. When your body has everything it needs you don’t just feel great, you look great as well. You don’t need tons of supplements to get the nutrients you need — just make sure to eat vegetables and fruit of all colors and shapes throughout the week, as well as different grains, nuts and seeds.

2. Train yourself to go to sleep earlier and fall asleep faster

When you’re young you can go for days on just 4–5 hours of sleep per night, but as you get older the body can’t regenerate as effectively, so you need all the sleep you can get. All it take is to get to bed an hour or two earlier. If you have trouble falling asleep, there are things you can do to train yourself to go to bed early and fall asleep within 10–20 minutes.

3. Moisturize daily and protect your skin

The skin often gets neglected, but it is the largest organ in the body, and one that gives away your age. Using the right products for your type of skin is very important, as well as a regular hygiene and moisturizing regimen.

4. Look into Botox and similar aesthetic procedure

At the end of the day, even the healthiest lifestyle and the best genetics in the world won’t allow you to actually stop the ageing process, but, thanks to modern medicine, we can still take steps to remedy some of its effects. The latest technology allows procedures like Botox injections to be performed routinely and safely, making aesthetic surgery a viable option for anyone who wants keep their face looking fresh and youthful.

These are just a few important guidelines for keeping your body looking great, even as you slowly move towards your twilight years, just as long as you are persistent with your positive life changes. Remember to also leave a little bit of quiet time for yourself, an hour or two here and there when you just dance to some music, read a book or focus on a fun hobby.
