Mistakes are normal things in business. Anyone who says otherwise is lying through his teeth. Everyone is going to take some chances and drop the ball every now and then, and having the ability to overcome these mistakes is what’s important. People who learn from their mistakes and never repeat them again are the ones who succeed in business.

This might sound easy, but it really isn’t — it takes a lot of hard work and stability to achieve such a mindset. The same rules apply when marketing apps. Still, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t care about making mistakes. It’s important to learn and prepare yourself as best as you can and avoid making mistakes that can be avoided.

It’s better to learn from other people’s mistakes if possible. This is why I’ve created this list of four things to avoid when marketing an app.

1. Making big promises you can’t fulfill

One of the most common mistakes app developers make is that they take it too far with their marketing promises. If you create unrealistic expectations in the minds of your potential clients, you won’t have a good time.

Sugar coating is a normal thing in marketing, but if you openly lie, you will create a lot of problems. People will expect that your app can do what you promised and when they buy it and realize you lied to them, there will be a strong backlash that will destroy your reputation and your marketing efforts will go to waste.

You might get a couple of sales until people realize you tricked them and then you can expect a lot of negative reviews. After that, nobody will buy anything from you ever again. Making a small amount of money quickly will not get you where you want to be.

Consider the future and the new apps you will be making. Even if they are the best, people will not buy them because you lost their trust.

2. Developing your app without previously considering marketing strategies

The biggest mistake you could possibly make is to think only about how to build an app that works well and not consider how you are going to market it. It’s important to build a quality product, but it’s also essential to consider marketing along the way.

A lot of people think that marketing is something simple and that it’s an easy thing to do. No matter how good you might be at developing apps, if you aren’t able to reach people who are interested in your app, then nobody will know how good it is.

Exposure is important, as there are millions of new apps coming out each year. In order to compete and get people interested in your products, you will have to work on your marketing campaign from the very start.

3. Not considering your target audience

Before you even start developing your app for a certain market, you need to do thorough research to find your target audience. You have to be in their shoes and understand what problems, interests and expectations they have.

A lot of app developers make the mistake of considering only demographics such as location, gender, age etc. but you need to learn more details about the people you will rely on to buy your app. Once you know your target audience, you will be able to create a product they will like more and create a story behind it that will make them fall in love with your app.

Reach out to as many people as you can and get some feedback. See what similar apps did well and what people liked and disliked about them. This brings us to the next important thing.

4. Not researching your competition

Once you’ve finished your product, you will probably be in a hurry to put it in as many stores as possible and wait to see the reactions. You shouldn’t rush things. The presentation of your product is an important thing and making a good first impression is the key to selling a product in large numbers.

You never know how many developers are out there currently offering similar apps. You never know unless, of course, you do a detailed market analysis.

If there is already a similar app on the market which has already got some success and buzz around it, you will never be able to sell yours unless you find a way to present it differently or tweak something about it and make it unique. Everyone will go with the app that already has good reviews and a fair amount of sales.

Conclusion

Performing successful marketing for a new app can be tough. This is why you need to learn as much as possible and consider absolutely everything that seems important for your success. Additionally, there are a lot of useful, small tools that can help you measure important numbers that can tell you valuable things such as where to invest more, what needs fixing and what is done properly.
