Now, before we continue, it’s important to add a bit of context, and give you my personal background. I am fairly old school in most cases, and enjoy perfecting the fine art of being a respectable gentleman. This lifestyle is not for everyone, although I know quite a few people who would greatly benefit from a few classes in proper gentlemanly behavior, but certain aspects can be incorporated into any man’s daily routines to make him a better, more confident and calmer person.

Case in point, shaving like real man, using shaving soap and a straight razor, instead of mucking around with cheap plastic razors. For me it is both the quintessential morning ritual that helps me relax and prepare for the busy day ahead, as well as one of the best confidence boosts. A straight razor gives you the cleanest and closest shave imaginable, but it takes a bit more skill, and you need to spend more time finding the right soap and aftershave if you don’t want your face to light up like Rudolph’s nose.

A few words of praise for Dr Jon Shaving Soap

Dr Jon’s Shaving Soap Company has not been around for a hundred years, and may, at first glance, lack some of the pedigree of some other notable soap makers, but this one has something truly unique to offer — the soaps aren’t made using tallow and fragrances, as traditional shaving soaps are made, instead they utilize a variety of natural butters and essential oils to produce a 100% vegan-friendly shaving product.

It’s not only those who morally oppose the killing of animals that will find this a godsend, as these unique alternative ingredients actually make for a gentle, nourishing and aromatic lather, vaguely reminiscent of a cream, but with a distinctly light and foamy lather, rivaling that of any high-quality tallow-based soap. Dr Jon is truly dedicated to making a fine product that will leave the user in awe. I’ve heard a ton of great things about these soaps, but until recently it was nearly impossible to get one if you were a resident of Europe, like myself, or the UK.

So, how can you get it within Europe and the UK, and how does it work?

Well, Dr Jon has recently gone into a distribution deal with RazWar, an online purveyor of all things shaving-related, and there is now a unique Dr Jon shaving soap fragrance available to my fellow European shaving enthusiasts. It is a bit on the more expensive side, but for the handcrafted quality that you get it is definitely a worthwhile investment. As any shaving soap, it works best with a little bit of water and a shaving brush, preferably super badger or silvertip badger bristle brushes, to apply it to your face.

The lather is foamy, but fairly thick, allowing for a smooth and incredibly clean shave without any inflammation of the skin. These little bad boys are an excellent gift for a friend or that special someone in your life who enjoys the fine art of wet shaving, although they can also be added to a shaving kit for someone who is just getting into wet shaving. Combined with a decent brush, after shave balm and straight razor — an old-school safety razor will do in a pinch — this can be one hell of gift, or you can just treat yourself to the easiest and closest shave of your life. Trust me, you deserve it.

All the benefits that a wet shave has to offer

I feel like I have ranted long enough about these wonderful handmade vegan shaving soaps, so I just want to leave you with a few parting words on the benefits of wet shaving with the right soap:

  • Less skin irritation
  • An incredibly close shave that inspires confidence
  • Soft and silky facial skin that your partner will appreciate
  • A beautiful and unobtrusive natural scent
  • A wonderful morning ritual that gets you ready for the rest of the day

All in all, the fact that we Europeans can now get one of the best handmade and highly eco-friendly shaving soaps on the planet by simply ordering it online, makes me incredibly happy. It seems that straight-razor shaving might make a comeback once all the hipsters decide to lose the beards.
