Before I begin to present you with some parenting advice, let me just take a moment to tell you one of the biggest universal truths about having a baby — it is as exhausting as you have probably heard. It is a fact that it is stressful and overwhelming, but it is definitely not something that you should be afraid of.

You are not the first nor the last person on the planet to have a baby and, if everyone else can do it, so can you. Yes, it can all be scary sometimes, and you will certainly find yourself in a situation where you wished you were somewhere far away, finally getting some rest with a cocktail in your hand. Nevertheless, you will instantly forget about all that the moment you see your baby’s smile.

Having a new baby is one of the most magical things you can ever experience. It is an amazingly special journey and you can literally feel no greater love than when you’re holding your little bundle of joy. While every parent’s experience is unique, there are some things each and every first-time parent should know when their baby arrives, so read on to learn about some tips that will help you out on your parenting adventure.

It’s Important to Get Some Shut-Eye

Managing to get some sleep with a baby in the house can be pretty tough, but getting enough sleep is important and you must try to give your mind and body a sufficient break. You may find that the time when your baby is sleeping is perfect for doing your chores around the house, since you can’t seem to find the time to do much while your baby is awake and your every moment is devoted to tending to its needs.

However, the best time for getting some shut-eye is actually when your baby is sleeping as well, especially if you are a single parent. You may think that you can’t sleep on demand, but trust me, you will fall asleep faster than you can imagine. If not, just lie down and the downtime will certainly leave you feeling refreshed.

Furthermore, the most common mistake couples make is getting up at the same time when their baby wakes up in the middle of the night. Taking turns is a much better option, since that way, you can both get some rest. Sleep deprivation can cause mood swings and can affect your memory, concentration and your ability to tend to your baby, so it is crucial not to exhaust yourself too much.

Don’t neglect your own health; you are not selfish if you think of your needs as well, instead of making your baby’s needs the only possible priority. Take care of yourself the way you take care of your baby. Sleep whenever you can, even if it is only for half an hour. Even that amount of time can be enough for you to recharge your batteries and have the energy to stay functional during the day.

Taking Some Personal Time Can Be Refreshing

Getting some personal time when you can be alone with your thoughts is one of the most important things for every new parent. You can get pretty stressed out being around your baby all day, all the while doing everything around the house, and that can be quite exhausting, especially if you’re either used to being around your friends all the time or spending time alone. If you’re feeling frustrated, your baby will pick up on your tension and stress, so it’s crucial that you take a timeout when that happens.

Having a little personal time when you have a baby can be very refreshing and it is important that you practice it several times a week. You can read a book, listen to music, watch your favourite TV show or take a long, warm bath — pretty much anything that relaxes you and helps you spend some quality time alone. You should really spend several hours a week doing something other than changing diapers. You will end up feeling much better and ready to take on anything.

Don’t Be Shy to Ask for Help

If asking for help is not something you are used to doing, it is high time that you start. If you are used to having control and doing everything on your own. It can be work or in any other aspect of your life. Asking someone for help may be the last thing on your list, but you need to know that you should not feel embarrassed to do it.

You should welcome any kind of help, since it can be good not only for you, but also for your baby. When there is more than just one or two caregivers, your baby will benefit a lot more from it, not to mention that you will feel better when you have some more time to relax and enjoy the beauty of parenthood.

If anyone offers you help, either with the baby or with anything around the house while you’re taking care of your baby, you should definitely not be too proud and refuse. Accept any kind of help and feel free to ask for it whenever you need a few more hands to help you out. They don’t say that “it takes a village to raise a child” for nothing.

Your Baby Is Your Best Teacher

As a first-time parent, you may think it is impossible to know when your baby is hungry, sleepy or needs a diaper change, but as days and weeks pass and your bond grows stronger, you will be able to read your baby’s tell-tale signs and know exactly what it needs. It’s important to know that you are not alone in feeling helpless sometimes; you are inexperienced and it is perfectly normal to feel insecure.

You will certainly receive plenty of words of wisdom from everyone you know, as people will give you advice on feeding and changing the baby, as well as any other thing related to taking proper care of it, and while you should welcome every piece of advice with open arms, too much information can make you mistrust your own judgment. That is why you must remember that your baby is your best teacher and that you should always trust your instincts.

Having a baby is absolutely the most amazing thing you can experience in your life and it is extremely important that you cherish every single moment of it. You have created a new life, so make great memories and enjoy the magic of parenthood.
